Meetings & Methods
Teaching - Property Law

You'll need some important information about when and where we'll meet, how the classes will run, the learning tools we'll use and so on.

Our class (CML 1108B for the 2011-2012 academic year) will meet in FTX 147:

  • Mondays (some weeks only) from 16:00-18:00,
  • Wednesdays from 10:00-11:30, and
  • Fridays from 11:30-1:00.

This class is not lecture-based. We don't just rehash the readings during class. The course is premised on active discussion, dynamic participation and significant student engagement. So it would be foolish to regularly rely on the assigned or supplemental readings, podcasts, or worse another student's notes, as a substitute for attendance. I understand that, on occasion for good reason, you may be unable to attend class. In such cases, you should read the relevant sections of the casebook and the textbook, watch the video recording, speak with the class tutor and see me if you're still having any troubles.

To guide our classroom sessions, I use tools other than PowerPoint slide shows. I simply can't think in linear bullets; I need more dynamic and organic visualization methods, so use a combination of mindmaps and prezis. These are only a learning tool, not an exhaustive list of points actually or intended to be covered. Feel free to ignore these if you don't find them helpful. Last time this course was offered, I provided a mindmap of every class downloadable from this website. I don't think I'm going to update those for 2011-2012. Rather, we're going to try something new by constructing a series of prezi landscapes to cover the entire course. These will become available immediately before the start of each class, and stay archived online at prezi.com.

The other key learning tool available to you is a bank of recordings of every class session. These aren't a substitute for attending class, but they can be used as a study aid. The recordings capture audio and video, as well as the computer's desktop. You can stream these online, or download them to your computer, iPod or other mobile device. You should be able to access all of the recordings from the University of Ottawa's archive, here. UPDATE: There is a new password protection scheme in place for these recordings, which is different than your other student accounts. Your username is your student number (ie 5555555) UPDATE: your username is your EMAIL USERNAME, and your password is in the form of YYYYMMDDSSuO, where:

· Y – is year of birth
· M – month of birth
· D – Day of Birth
· SS – last two digits of student number
· uO
For example, 1969110433uO would be a password for a student with DOB 1969-11-04, student number 4650133.

The last thing I'll mention here is the structure and purpose of our special "Monday" sessions. The purpose is to show you how property concepts intersect with popular culture films, documentary narratives or the personal experiences of guest speakers. Check the map for the precise dates on which we'll open the wings of FTX 147, 147A and 147B to joint all other sections for movies or guest speakers. The content covered during these sections are fully examinable (check out my past exams for proof), so attendance is mandatory.
