I just arrived in Banff, Alberta for NextMEDIA's conference on "The Future of Digital Content" preceeding the Banff World Television Festival. I'll be speaking Sunday afternoon about burning business issues affecting new media. My contribution to the panel discussion will focus on the intersection of 2 of the hottest issues going: copyright reform and network neutrality, which I figure are on a collision course. Internet intermediaries and mobile communications companies are being pressured at the same time by different groups to be either neutral networks or copyright cops, and finding a middle ground to satisfy all stakeholders won't be easy. Throw into the mix upcoming CRTC hearings on net neutrality and pending copyright reforms, and you've got the recipe for a very complex legal, regulatory and business dilemma. I'll post my thoughts on how to sort through the public policy issues after Sunday's session.
