At the IT.Can annual conference Professor deBeer presented a paper on the links between information technologies and biotechnologies. He highlighted recent judicial developments in the area of Canadian biotech law to demonstrate disequilibriumwhen it comes to the rights and liabilities of GMO patent owners. This legal instability is likely to lead to increasing use of "genetic use restriction technologies" ("GURTs") -- the biological equivalent of technological protection measures being debated in copyright circles.
