In Ottawa on Tuesday 03 June 08 I'll be presenting some of my new research (forthcoming in the next issue of the Canadian Business Law Journal) on the law as it relates to businesses models involving peer production by creative consumers. Come check it out ...
OCRI 45th Circuit - Tuesday June 3, 2008
Sheraton Ottawa Hotel 11:45 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
How to Capitalize on Consumer Creativity
What do you do when your customers get creative and behave in ways you didn't expect? Should you assert intellectual property rights to stop them from tinkering with your technology? Should you discourage disruption and the inconvenience it can cause? Or do you embrace consumer creativity, and adapt business strategies to fit your customers' behaviour. The choice isn't always clear. Different circumstances call for different responses.
At this session of OCRI's 45th Circuit, University of Ottawa law professor Jeremy de Beer will present new research on the best legal strategies to capitalize on consumer creativity. With a focus on internet communications and the high technology industry, he will analyze the ways in which firms can respond to recent trends in consumer-driven innovation. Can you capture and empower customers by enforcing your IPRs selectively? What licensing models are available to leverage and exploit your consumers' creativity? Are there risks to using consumer-created content in your business, and how can these be managed? On Tuesday, June 3, Professor de Beer's presentation will shed light on these and other relevant questions facing Ottawa's technology community.
