This half-term course will introduce you to the tort of negligence. Public opinion of tort law has been skewed by high-profile litigation, particularly in the US. Even Weird Al is poking fun of torts these days. After completing this course, you'll have the legal skills to assess whether claims like the following have any chance of success.
After talking about the functions of the tort system and the evolution
of this cause of action, we will cover its fundamental contemporary
elements. These elements include duty of care, standard of care,
remoteness and proof of causation. We will also talk about defences to
the tort of negligence, damages and a number of other specialized
topics. A series of high-profile experts will provide guest lectures to
give you insights into specialized topics, like class action
proceedings and pure economic loss for example.
